Katarina Wit started skating when she was five. She was able to prove her skills and get into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school for gifted kids. They got to know Jutta Muller here. Her breakthrough year was in 1982 when she finished second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Following that, she started winning the competition with elegance and grace. Olympic Success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women following a heatedly-contested competition. Four years later, her win, she managed to take home an even competitive race. She did not win the contest for free skating, however, she was awarded gold for her results during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt was the only woman since Sonja Haenie who was an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in film acting, then returned to figure skating to compete in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. While she did not win a single medal, she delighted fans with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame on the 15th of April, 1995.
